If you are unable to travel
by backpack there are many other options
available. Simply search 'Wheeled Backpack
Luggage' and you will see all the different
possibilities. Keeping in mind our 'No
Checked Bag' rule, we have selected one of our
favorites to give you an example of what is
available and what to consider.
We chose a soft sided piece
as we are fans of the flexibility it provides
allowing it to fit more easily into cramped
airline overheads compared to hard sided
luggage. This is actually a computer luggage
bag but serves just as well as travel luggage.
The bag has a telescoping handle and wheels
allowing it to be pulled around easily. It
also has tuck-away straps allowing the bag to be
worn as a backpack. This bag should meet airline carry on bag restrictions. (Airline Size & Weight

Properly packed, you should be underweight even on a two week journey. (How to Pack)

The Pros
-
Easy and convenient to pull around
-
Can be worn as a backpack when necessary
-
Looks good compared to other luggage that can be
worn as a backpack
- Meets airline requirements for
carry on luggage
Mostly soft sided
pack so it fits more easily into cramped
overhead airline compartments compared to hard sided
luggage
The Cons
- Slightly heaver than a true backpack
of the same size
- No compression straps helping to
tighten down the size or attach a jacket
or clothing externally
- The pack has a rigid back side so
not quite a flexible as a backpack that
is entirely soft sided so may be more
difficult to stow in airline overhead
bins
- With the rigid back side, wearing
the bag on your back is not as
comfortable as a true backpack
- In Europe you may encounter cobblestone streets and
pulling a rolling suite case can be
awkward
- Boarding busses and
trains with high or multiple steps can be more
difficult when having to lift a bag
- Heavier than a traditional backpack
requiring you to be more conscious of
airline weight restrictions to avoid
having to check your bag or pay
additional fees
