No doubt you have some type
of home or auto insurance. If you
are interested in purchasing Travel Insurance,
the first step is to contact your insurance
company and ask them about it. If the
offer it, check the rates, coverage and
deductible. After that, do some research
and compare to other providers before you make
your final decision.
Consider two areas of
coverage on the same policy: Travel and
Medical
Although most insurers
provide some amount of coverage for both travel
and medical, some may focus more on travel
related coverage for things such as
cancellations, delays, lost luggage, etc. while
others may focus more on medical related issues.
You will only be purchasing
insurance for your actual travel dates
- 1. Contact your
current insurance provider and ask about
their Travel Insurance coverage
- Typical home and
auto insurance may not provide travel
insurance so more than likely you will
need to consider another third party
insurer
- 2. Research
what is covered for various situations
such as medical, missed flight, adverse
weather conditions, etc.
- 3. Make note of the
coverage amounts, deductible and cost
If you decide to purchase travel insurance, add
a 'Not Booked' activity
having a title of 'Travel
Insurance' to the your home location in the
Trip Builder reminding you to book your
insurance prior to your departure. Once
booked, update the activity with the policy
information, contact numbers, etc. and change
the status to 'Booked'.
GeoBlue
We have limited
experience with travel insurance and have
never needed to file a claim. Based on
our travel needs, we have purchased
insurance from GeoBlue, helping to give us
piece of mind should something happen during
our travels.
We decided on GeoBlue
after reading about their coverage, cost and
reviews by others filing claims. On
their website it's very easy to get a quote
and see what your options are. They
provide levels of travel and medical but are
more focused on medical coverage compared to
others we have researched. Based on
how we travel, we wanted something more
focused on medical than the travel side.
For a two week trip to Europe for two people
you can select a $0 deductable with $1MM
coverage at a cost of about $100.
(This may vary depending on the age of the
travelers)
From their website
GeoBlue provides

Cross Blue Shield Association; however, you
do not have to be currently enrolled in a

to purchase a GeoBlue plan.

Research
If your insurance company does not provide
travel insurance or you are not happy with their
levels of coverage, simply Google 'Travel
Insurance' and you will find several links
to sites offering insurance. You will also
find sites that have done comparisons on
different insurance companies such as at the
link below but we recommend selecting each
site individually and read about what they
offer on their own websites.
Keep in mind that each company will provide
different levels of coverage at different
prices, so select the one that best suites
your travel needs.
